“FORTAIE” della Val di Fassa

Just after daily trekking we stopped for a snack with some Fortaie, stuffed with cranberry jam and Nutella. This typical desert that looks like a sweet pancake has ancient origins. However, if you are good with your diet, just forget it 😅. But if you go for this festival you must have it 😋

Recommendations: to fully enjoy them, to be consumed warm and on an empty stomach!

HISTORY: This is a typical carnival desert. But in the past it was customary to bring some to the shepherds who took care of the animals at the mountain pasture, on the occasion of the feast of St. Peter and Paul, on 29 June. Moreover, In the Ladin wedding tradition the Fortaie were put on the table the evening when the groom arrived at the bride’s house to prepare the wedding. On that evening the groom’s friends, neighbors or others interested in the girl went to steal the Fortaie.

RECIPE:

  • 300 gr of flour
  • 80 gr of butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Seed oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar.

Break the eggs in a bowl, add a pinch of salt and milk (and if you want, Grappa). Pour the flour and melted butter  until you have a soft batter. Use a normal funnel to drop the batter into the boiling oil making a circular movement from the centre to the outside making an irregular spiral shape. Fry until they are golden brown, drain on paper towels and serve hot with powdered sugar and jam (or chocolate)

(We recommend to use organic ingredients, especially flour and milk!)
